The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is home to a rich variety of traditional musical genres, which serve as an inexhaustible resource for the region’s cultural development. The preservation and utilization of these traditions are vital for shaping local cultural identities and countering cultural homogenization. Over the next three years, this research base will focus on three key areas:

Research on Intangible Cultural Heritage Musical Genres:

This includes historical, classificatory, musicological, instrumental, performative, and cultural studies of Intangible Cultural Heritage musical genres in the Greater Bay Area, as well as investigations into their inheritors and regional contexts.

Research on Intangible Cultural Heritage Musical Preservation:

Aimed at addressing bottlenecks in Intangible Cultural Heritage safeguarding efforts, this strand explores pathways and methodologies for transmitting Intangible Cultural Heritage music to future generations.

Research on the Creative Reuse of Intangible Cultural Heritage Music:

This area examines how Intangible Cultural Heritage music can inspire contemporary musical creation, serving as a resource to embody Chinese cultural values and inform innovative compositional techniques.

Research outcomes will be disseminated through policy advisory reports, academic papers, monographs, and original musical works.
