Developing business case in accounting for business combinations for advanced financial accounting course
Advanced Financial Accounting course is generally considered one of the more challenging courses in an accounting bachelor's programme. This is due to the complex accounting concepts covered, particularly those related to the accounting for business combinations.
Adopting case-based teaching in accounting for business combinations could enhance students’ learning experience and effectiveness by making the class more practical and engaging. However, many existing cases tend to be oriented towards finance or management perspectives, rather than focusing on accounting concepts.
This project aims to develop a business case that is accounting-oriented, with a targeted emphasis on the Acquisition Method for business combinations. The primary objectives are to facilitate deeper understanding and application of the Acquisition Method and to enable rigorous analysis of the financial reporting implications. The case will be grounded in real-life business combination scenarios. It will be piloted in an actual classroom setting.
Students’ feedback will be used to refine the case before integration into the advanced financial accounting course. This project seeks to elevate the teaching and learning of accounting for business combinations, a critical component in advanced financial accounting curriculum.
