Paragraph writing is crucial to incorporating academic research into written work at the university level; therefore, developing effective and robust paragraphs is one of the primary responsibilities of the students. Despite the importance of paragraph writing, first- and second-year students generally lack the basics of composing a standard paragraph. One possibility of their common mistakes in writing a paragraph is the high-school English education in China, where English is taught not as a foreign language used for communication but to help students pass exams. As most students know the five-paragraph essay structure template and follow it precisely without sufficient follow-up and feedback from teachers, such a complicated operation of paragraph writing makes students more vulnerable to slip-ups and more anxious when writing. Hence, our project aims to develop an e-learning course in a short and affordable schedule by adopting the reading software Active Reading from the SALL Center to assist students’ development of paragraph writing. By teaching how to analyze and critique another’s viewpoint while reading model texts, students can master essential components of paragraph writing with the help of sufficient written and oral feedback on their written tasks. It can benefit anyone who needs extra training in paragraph writing.
